Benamor course

Sir Henry Cotton was inspired by Quinta de Benamor's old church to plan a clubhouse here which would have been the first course in this Algarve region. Unfortunately, the legendary British golf champion and course designer died the following year, and the project underwent various changes under Howard Swan and Raymond Jones. It is their touch that gives the course, finally opened in 2000, it's defining characteristics.

It is a reasonably undulating course, boasting both mountain and sea-views, dotted largely by carob, olive and fig trees. The opening holes of each nine are the easiest, offering birdie opportunities, but the rest are longer and more difficult. The greens are wide and inviting, and hold the ball well.

The church is being completely renovated and will shortly be open for worship; the clubhouse was built next to the church and the farm's old manor house. Together with Castro Marim, the new course at Benamor has the distinction of finally bringing the game to the Leeward Algarve region.
